What’s with this rash of people getting behind the wheel after drinking and then being found naked?
The other day, country music star Randy Travis was found lying in a Texas roadway drunk and naked, and was arrested and charged with retaliation against police officers in addition to DUI after he threatened to “shoot and kill” the state troopers who took him into custody.
And around the same time in Montana, a man was arrested for drunk driving after he was accused of mooning a resident of Montana outside his home. He was caught by police as he attempted to flee the scene in his truck.
And now this.
About ten days ago in Dearborn, Michigan, a man was arrested by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was found nude and drunk behind the wheel of his car.
57-year-old Peter Petroske was taken into custody after he had apparently driven through this Detroit suburb alone, unclothed and intoxicated, with a laptop computer at his side. But wait, there’s more…
Petroske’s arrest took place in the early morning hours of Friday, August 3rd, about a block from Sacred Heart Parish, Dearborn’s second-largest Catholic church. A drunk, naked man doing who-knows-what with a laptop in his car that close to a church is strange enough, but Peter Petroske isn’t some anonymous resident of the Dearborn community. He is an ordained priest. In fact, he is the pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, a position he has held since 2008.
For some reason, the Archdiocese of Detroit did not learn about the arrest until Sunday night, after Petroske conducted mass at Sacred Heart. He was placed on administrative leave the next day.
The Dearborn community is understandably shocked by the arrest of a respected member of the community, and under such weird circumstances. Petroske was a hard-working member of the Catholic clergy in Michigan, starting out as an associate pastor in a small parish on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula before eventually assuming various assignments and pastoral duties at several churches in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Sacred Heart Church parishioners held Petroske in high esteem. A member of the church’s Pastoral Council called him a “fantastic pastor [and] inspiring speaker” who had a sincere appreciation for scripture and the liturgy. A retired priest from Dearborn has taken over day-to-day operations of the church and affiliated school until Petroske’s legal situation is resolved.
The Dearborn Police Department is not commenting on their investigation, but a statement from the archdiocese released last week confirmed Petroske’s arrest and the fact that he was not clothed at the time; a “knowledgeable city source” added Petroske had a computer with him when he was taken into custody.
The statement from the archdiocese went on to say that the German-born priest has been charged with DUI and indecent exposure.
