Drunk Boating Accident Leads to Death of 10 Year Old Boy in Illinois

Although drinking and driving is the most common type of DUI, operating other vehicles such as motorcycles, bikes and boats while under the influence of alcohol are no less dangerous and sometimes lead to very serious accidents. A sad reminder of this fact was reported last week in Chicago, Illinois where a tragic drunk boating accident took the life of a young child in a town north of the city.

Tony Borcia, 10, of the distant Chicago suburb of Libertyville, Illinois was tubing at a state park when the accident occurred. Tubing is an activity wherein an individual sits inside a donut-shaped rubber tube and either floats atop the surface of a body of water or is tugged along behind a boat or other watercraft. The site of the accident was in one of the many natural lakes and rivers that make up the Chain O’Lakes State Park near Illinois’ border with Wisconsin, about sixty miles northwest of Chicago.

According to reports, David Hatyina was high on drugs, specifically cocaine, and had been drinking prior to the accident.  The 50-year-old Hatyina was operating a boat in late July of this year when his path crossed that of young Tony Borcia.

Tony and a few of his siblings were in rubber tubes being towed by his father from a boat when the accident occurred. Tony’s father witnessed the terrible accident that took his son’s life.

Police questioned Hatyina and had his blood tested for alcohol and drugs. The results of the tests indicated Hatyina had both cocaine and alcohol in his system when the accident occurred.

Now, Hatyina is facing serious criminal charges that could send him to prison for many years if he is convicted. He has been arraigned on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence and is being held on $1 million bail.
